Peniscola Castle Costa del Azahar

Filed under: Costa del Azahar, History, Spain — Tags: , , — needahand @ 9:38 am

The town of Peniscola, located on the Costa del Azahar, Valencia, Spain, is dominated by its charismatic castle, in fact the old part of the town is within the castle walls, where it would have been safe from pirate attacks, way back in more dangerous times. Often called the Castle of Papa Luna, Peniscola castle dates from the times of the Moors and was later conquered by Jaime I and ceded to the Knights Templar who changed and improved the fortification. The castle subsequently came under the control of the Order of Montesa, who gave it to Pope Luna (Benedict XIII) and it became his home for many years. The castle of Peniscola saw action in many conflicts including the War of Succession. The castle took on a different role in the 20th century and was the location for some of the scenes in the famous film ‘El Cid’, directed by Anthony Mann. The castle today is well preserved and worth a visit if you are in the Costa del Azahar area.

Among the places to visit whilst on a trip to Cyprus, Paphos castle, situated in the harbour area of Paphos, was first built during the Byzantine period. Destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1222, the castle was later rebuilt by the Lusignans. The castle has served many purposes over the centuries, and although primarily a fortress, it has also been used as a prison, a salt warehouse and a cultural centre. Paphos castle became a listed building in 1935 and several excavasions have been undertaked to discover the true history of the structure. Paphos Map.

Mazarron Castle Murcia

Whilst visiting the Costa Calida, you might want to take a look at the newly restored Mazarron castle, which while still largely a ruin, has been conserved for the future. Originally built by the Duke of Velez in the 16th century, Mazarron castle served the area both as a defense against pirate attacks and for the protection of the valuable alum mining industry, which was important in Mazarron at that time. Mazarron and its coastal limb Puerto Mazarron, are popular tourist locations for the region of Murcia, and there are plenty more locations to visit in the area during your stay. Beach lovers will find over 30 beaches in the region. Mazarron Map.
