Located close to Bournemouth in the English county of Dorset, the town of Poole is a seaport with a population of around 140,000. The second largest town in Dorset, Poole has an economy which revolves around service industries, manufacturing and tourism. Settled as long ago as the Iron Age, Poole's name is probably derived from the Celtic word 'pol'.
The Romans landed at Poole in the 1st century AD, and it later saw invasions by Vikings and Danes. After the Norman conquest of England, Poole developed as a significant port and continued to grow throughout the ensueing centuries, it was a major point of departure for the D-Day landings during the Second World War. Poole and its environs are popular with tourists, there are some fine beaches around Poole Bay and some interesting places to visit in and around Poole.
Poole has good road, rail and ferry links and can also be accessed by air via Bournemouth International Airport nearby. Poole can be accessed from the A350 (A35) and A348, it has rail links with London Waterloo and ferry connections with Cherbourg, Guernsey, Jersey and St Malo.
