The town has a resident population of around 20,000 and a municipal district of 9.05 square kilometres. The modern resort is well known for its excellent sandy beaches (such as L\u2019Astillero) which are backed by hotels and apartment complexes, there are a good choice of bars and restaurants which become very busy during the summer season when the <a title=\"SUN RAIN OR CLOUD IN MALGRAT DE MAR TODAY? CHECK OUT THE LATEST WEATHER\" href=\"http:\/\/www.needahandspanishproperties.com\/malgrat-de-mar-weather.html\">climate<\/a> is fine and sunny. The original village developed during the 13<sup>th<\/sup> and 14<sup>th<\/sup> centuries when it was known Vilanova de Palafolls, the original dwellings were erected on a hill called \u201cEs Castell\u201d, for many centuries Malgrat de Mar relied on fishing for its economic survival and this continued until the 1950\u2019s and 1960\u2019s when the explosion of tourism changed the face of the town forever, and the population grew from under 4,000 to its present level. In the old town there are still some well preserved older buildings showing evidence of its long history, the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century church of Sant Nicolau is often referred to as the \u201cCathedral of the Coast\u201d due to its large size.
